Founder & Lead Tester

Hi, I’m Trixie-LD.

I founded Home Gear Ratings to give home cooks the kind of honest, technically rigorous appliance reviews that I could never find when I needed them most. No sponsored rankings, no recycled spec sheets — just real testing and real verdicts.

My Story
Why I Started This Site

My journey into the world of home appliances started in the heart of the home: the kitchen. As someone with a background in technical product analysis and a genuine obsession with cooking, I kept running into the same frustrating problem — every “best of” list online looked identical, filled with vague praise and hidden affiliate incentives.

So I started doing my own research. I measured boiling times. I tested heat distribution across cooking zones. I lived with appliances for weeks before writing a single word. What began as a personal habit became Home Gear Ratings — a site built on one principle: if I wouldn’t stake my own kitchen on a recommendation, it doesn’t go on the site.

“I don’t just write about appliances — I live with them. My mission is to find the perfect balance between high-end performance and everyday practicality.”

Today, my deepest expertise is in induction cooktops — a category I’ve spent more time with than any other. I’ve reviewed everything from a $470 Empava built-in to a $12,499 Thermador Freedom, tested portable burners for small-space cooks, and dug deep into the kind of questions that buyers actually search for — like whether your existing cookware will even work or why your new cooktop is making that buzzing sound.

Beyond induction, I test and analyze a full range of kitchen appliances — from gas stoves and ovens to rice cookers, pressure cookers, slow cookers, and cookware. If it lives in your kitchen, I’m probably testing it.

When I’m not measuring boiling times or evaluating non-stick coatings, I’m experimenting with new recipes or organizing my kitchen for maximum efficiency. I believe that the right tools don’t just cook food — they create time for what truly matters: sharing a meal with the people you love.

Areas of Expertise
What I Test & Cover

My review process runs deep across five core areas of the home kitchen.

Induction Cooktops
My primary focus. From portable 1,300W burners to full-surface luxury slabs — I cover every tier, every brand, and every use case.
🔥
Gas & Electric Stoves
Heat control, BTU performance, and the real-world differences between cooking on gas vs induction vs electric.
⏱️
Slow & Pressure Cooking
Rice cookers, pressure cookers, slow cookers — tested for consistency, safety features, and set-and-forget reliability.
🍳
Cookware & Tools
Cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, Dutch ovens — the foundation of a well-equipped kitchen, analyzed in depth.
📡
Countertop Gadgets
Microwave ovens, toasters, ice makers — tested for consistency, durability, and whether they’re actually worth the counter space.
Review Methodology
How Every Review Gets Made

My process is the same for every product — from a $59 portable burner to a $12,000 luxury cooktop.

01
Technical specification analysis
I start by dissecting wattage, zone count, glass type, control interface, and electrical requirements — the specs that marketing materials bury or deliberately obscure. For induction cooktops, this means understanding what price tier actually buys you.
02
Heat distribution & performance testing
Every cooktop gets measured for heat evenness, temperature accuracy at each power level, and boil time under standardized conditions. I test with multiple cookware types — including checking induction compatibility across cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel.
03
Real-world daily use testing
I live with appliances, not just unbox them. This means testing how surfaces hold up to spills, scratches, and repetitive daily use — and identifying issues like buzzing or humming noise that only appear in real use conditions.
04
Safety & reliability evaluation
Child lock reliability, residual heat indicators, overheat protection, and — for installation-heavy products — wiring and setup requirements are all verified, not assumed from spec sheets.
05
Value verdict
Performance at a price point, not in isolation. If a product doesn’t meet my standards for safety, value, and everyday performance, it won’t make it onto my recommended list — regardless of brand reputation or price tier.

Have a Question?

I read every message I receive and reply personally. Whether you have a specific product question, need help choosing between two models, or just want to share feedback about the site — I’m happy to hear from you.

Common questions I get asked include things like: “Is the Bosch 800 Series worth the upgrade over the 500 Series?” or “My cast iron pan works on induction but makes a lot of noise — is that normal?” — these are exactly the kinds of questions I love answering.

I do not accept sponsored content, paid placements, or free products in exchange for positive reviews. Every recommendation on this site reflects my honest, independent assessment.
